1 The Origin Of The Word Gorilla Means Tribe Of Hairy Women

did word gorilla originate

Before we get to the origin of the meaning of gorilla and its unflattering association with women we will share some other fascinating facts about gorillas.
The largest primate in the world is the gorilla. An adult male usually weighs between 135 to 180 kilograms (400 to 400 lb) and stand a little shorter than a man at between 1.7 to 1.8 metres (5.6 to 5.9 ft) tall. The arm span of the male stretches as far as 2.6 metres (8.5 ft). The males are known as silverbacks due to the silver hair that grows on their backs.

ow they are pretty interesting facts, but have you ever wondered the origin of the name gorilla and what it means? It’s very unflattering, to say the least. Gorillas got their name from American Physiciannd missionary Thomas Staughton Savage and naturalist Jeffries Wyman. Gorilla was derived from Greek Γόριλλαι (Gorillai), meaning “tribe of hairy women”.

2 Giraffe’s Sleep For Only 4.6 Hours A Day

how long do giraffes sleep a day

Question. How long do giraffes sleep a day? It’s a relatively straight forward question, and something that now has your attention and thoughts. So do you know how long do giraffes sleep a day?

The worlds tallest mammal, the giraffe, actually sleeps for only a very short period of time each day. Unlike other animals such as cats, sloths and koalas which require huge amounts of sleep, the giraffe only needs on average about 4.6 hours per day, the majority of which occurs at night. But now you are probably wondering how does a giraffe sleep? A giraffe will occasionally sleep while standing, but more often than not it will sleep laying down. While it is sleeping in a laying position it will bend its neck back and rest its head on either its hip or thigh.

Here are a few more interesting facts about giraffes.

  • Giraffes stand between 4.3 to 5.3 metres tall.
  • A male can weigh up to 1930 kilograms while a female can weigh as much as 1180 kilograms.
  • The heart can weigh up to 10 kilograms and measure up to 60 centimetres long.
  • The blood pressure of a giraffe is about double that of any other land animal.
  • The neck of a giraffe accounts for about half of its height.
  • It can consume on average around 29 kilograms of leaves and twigs each day.
  • Despite their long necks, they have the same number of vertebra as all other animals.

3 The Main Cause Of Elephant Deaths Is Starvation

main cause of elephant deaths

Elephants are the largest land animals in the world, and most elephants live for about 65 years. They have been the target of hunting for their ivory for centuries and their numbers are dwindling. The hazards many wild elephants face are poachers and land-mines from conflicts. In other words, us. But there is a far more common cause of death for elephants, and it is starvation.

When elephants die it is rarely from poor health or old age. They usually starve to death. This is because elephants replace their teeth 6 times throughout their lifetime.  Elephants have 4 molars. When the front two wear down they fall out and the two behind move forward and two new molars emerge at the back of their mouth. When all of their teeth fall out they will starve to death, usually around the age of 65.

4 There Are Giant Fluorescent Pink Slugs In Australia

It is well known that the animals in Australia are exotic and different to most of the other animals in the world. That list of strange animals just grew by one. A recently discovered slug at Mount Kaputar, near Narrabri in New South Wales is a bright fluorescent pink and can grow up to 20 centimetres (8 inches) long. So not only does it appear that Australia has a pink lake but also pink slugs.

It is believed they are a remnant from millions years ago when much of Australia’s eastern seaboard was dense rainforest. They have been able to survive in this usually dry environment due to a volcanic eruption around 17 million years ago that allowed them to survive in a hidden, moist habitat.

The slugs are genetically distinct being restricted to the mountain top that covers an area roughly 10 kilometres by 10 kilometres (6.2 miles by 6.2 miles). Following the discovery the area has been declared a endangered ecological community, granting it the highest level of protection from development and intrusion.

5 Adult Luna Moths Have No Mouth Because Their Purpose In Life Is To Breed

Adult Luna Moths Have No Mouth

The adult luna moth doesn’t have a mouth. It wasn’t always that way though. While it was a caterpillar it had a mouth and munched its way merrily along until it had to form a cocoon to become an adult. So imagine its shock when it discovers what has actually happened to its body once it emerges.

After it emerges from its cocoon one of the many changes the luna moth experiences from caterpillar to moth is a loss of its mouth. Its wings are also weak and small, requiring it to pump body fluid into them to enlarge, then wait for several hours for them to harden up. Because the adult luna moth has no mouth, they can’t even complain to anyone, or celebrate with a meal or a drink at the local bar.

It’s really depressing really. The sole purpose of an adult luna moth is to breed and then die about a week later from starvation.

6 Cats Can Not Taste Sweet Things

cats taste sweet

Cats can not taste sweet things. We are serious here. No cats, be they big or small, cute or scary, can taste anything sweet. You might be thinking that we are mad here, especially if you have a cat that seems to love the taste of milk, but scientific evidence has shown beyond a doubt that cats can not taste sweet. And this is why.

A long time ago cats could taste things that were sweet. But for some reason, the gene that is responsible for detecting the taste of sweetness, was turned off, or lost. The thing is, once it is gone, it is gone for ever. But what about the cats that do eat things that are sweet, such as milk, cake and ice cream?

The most likely answer is that they are eating them for the fat content. Fat can be stored by the cat and used later during periods where they can’t find any food.

As for tasting sweet things, cats are missing out on something that is very beneficial to all living animals. As taste is the final sense that can alert us if we should be placing something into our bodies, it is pretty important. Most poisonous foods are bitter, and that alerts us not to consume it and possibly kill ourselves. Sweet foods on the other hand are high in calories, which was hugely beneficial to ancient man, and all creatures great and small.

7 Sharks Have Growth Rings

Sharks Growth Rings

Not only do sharks have growth rings, these same growth rings on sharks can be used to tell just how old the individual shark is. To me this came as a bit of a surprise, especially considering that I only ever thought that trees could be aged in such a way. But it turns out that this is not that rare a thing in marine animals.

To determine the age of many marine animals you generally count growth rings that are on their teeth, scales or ear bones. Apart from the ear bone, aging these animals doesn’t result in killing the beast. To get the age of a shark you have to kill it and then count the rings on its vertebrae. However, the shark growth rings will not give the the life expectancy of a shark.

8 African Grey Parrots Are As Smart As A 5 Year Old Child

Did you know some parrots have the intelligence of a 5 year old child? It’s true. Studies have been carried out and some parrots can do simple math and read. African Grey Parrots are extremely talkative, sensitive and intelligent. They seem to exhibit reasoning which most animals in the animal kingdom can not do. Many people regard African Grey as being “high strung and neurotic”, but if helped to feel safe can be one of the best companions you can get.

9 Guinea Pig Popcorning Is A Move That Guinea Pigs Make

crazy animal facts

Guinea pigs are a popular household pet, despite them being a rodent. They are native to South America where they were originally domesticated. Before European expansion into the Americas, many South American cultures used guinea pigs for food, religious rituals, healing and gift exchanges. After the European conquest of the region they were taken back to Europe where they were used as an exotic pet. In more recent times they have been used in medical and cosmetic testing, coining the phrase “be a guinea pig”. Testing is pretty mean, but this is cool. Have you heard of guinea pig popcorning?

Guinea pig popcorning is a real thing. It has nothing to do with the popular, and if purchased from a cinema, over priced snack. It is a behaviour. Popcorning is when they hop in the air, running around, turning quickly and performing the jump again. This action can be done repeatedly. It is often seen in young guinea pigs when they are happy, excited or playful. Older guinea pigs often exhibit this trait, but don’t jump as high.

10 Goats, Sheep, Octopus And Toads Have Rectangular Pupils

Goats, Sheep, Octopus And Toads Have Rectangular Pupils

You may not have ever noticed this, but goats, along with sheep, octopus and toads have rectangular pupils. While many sources will say that these animals have rectangular eyes it is only the pupil that is rectangular in shape.

The reason these animals have rectangular pupils is because they are an animal of prey. If their pupil is rectangular, not round or a vertical slit as in snakes, cats and crocodiles, it gives them a wider field of view. This wider field of view helps them to avoid being a predators lunch time meal.

11 Why Is A Matadors Cape Red? The Matadors Cape Is Red To Hide Blood

why is a matador's cape red

Continuing with our list of crazy animal facts is the gruesome sport, if you can call it that, of bull fighting.

Now this is a question that I bet that you didn’t really want to ask after you finish reading the answer. Why is a matadors cape red? A matadors cape is red for no other purpose than to hide blood from the wounded bull.

When one thinks of bull fighting one of the first items that comes into mind is the matadors red cape and a raging bull charging it in anger.

The common misconception is that the matadors red cape, called a muleta is red because it enrages a bull. This couldn’t be farther from the truth as bulls are color blind. The Myth Busters even did a segment on this idea and proved that the color of an item had no bearing whether or not a bull will charge it. To support this, the muleta isn’t even the only cape a matador uses in the bull fight. In the early part of the fight the matador uses a larger cape that is magenta on one side and gold or blue on the other side, and the bull charges it with equal frenzy.

So why then is the matadors cape red? The matadors cape is red to hide the blood splatters of the bull. It comes out in the final, gruesome end of the fight when the blood and gore is t its zenith. So that is why a matadors cape is red. Not to piss off a bull that has been stabbed and cut several times. It’s used to conceal the barbarity of the “sport.”

12 Some Cicadas Can Live For 17 Years

Most insects have an extremely short lifespan, but not all of them. Did you know that some cicadas can live for up to 17 years? Periodical cicadas, which are native to eastern North America can live for up to 17 years. Once hatched, the cicadas live in the ground as nymphs for between 13 to 17 years, at a depth of between 30 centimetres (0.98 ft) down to 2.5 metres (8.2 ft). This particular species of cicada, when ready, will all begin to emerge at about the same time. They spend only 6 weeks of their extremely long life above ground to mate and begin the life cycle once more.

13 The Female Spotted Hyena Has A Pseudo-penis

Female Spotted Hyena Has A Pseudo-penis

Being able to tell the difference between a male and female spotted hyena is difficult. The reason it is difficult is because the female spotted hyena has a pseudo-penis. The pseudo-penis of the female spotted hyena is actually the clitoris, it is just positioned and shaped like the penis of the male. The pseudo-penis of the spotted hyena is also capable of an erection. The labia of the spotted hyena is also fused closed, giving it a pseudo-scrotum.

While it is difficult to distinguish the difference between a male and female spotted hyena it is possible. The pseudo-penis can be identified by its thicker appearance and more rounded glans. Furthermore, they have to give birth through it.

14 How Fast Can A Bee Fly? About 15 MPH

How Fast Can A Bee Fly

Have you ever wondered how fast a bee flies? Looking at them while they are working they don’t seem to fly all that quickly. But having been at the receiving end of a swarm attacking me, I can assure you that they can move very fast if they want to. So this got me wondering. How fast can a bee fly?

The speed a honey bee flies at is approximately 24 kilometres per hour (15 miles per hour).

15 Are Boa Constrictors And Pythons The Same?

Are Boa Constrictors And Pythons The Same

Boa constrictors and pythons are both non venomous large snakes, but they are not the same animal. They have at least one main difference between them. The main difference between a python and boa is that a python lays eggs, as most snakes do. A boa actually gives birth to live young and are found only in the Americas and Caribbean islands.

16 There’s a Breed Of Dog That Can Not Bark

There is a breed of dog that can not bark. It is called a Basenji. They can howl, growl and crow depending on its mood.

All modern dogs are descendants of the wolf which is a member of the canid family, but is not domesticated, more primitive and also incapable of barking.

17 Live Fish In A Duck Egg

Live Fish In A Duck Egg

This is as spectacular and amazing as it is mind boggling. In 2006 in the French Alps a group on an outing found a duck egg in a small pond and noticed something was moving inside it. The members of the group cracked open the egg and found three live minnows, which are a small freshwater fish often used as bait.

Biologists at the University of Manchester admit that they are baffled as to how the fish came to be inside the egg. They were certain that the egg didn’t contain any cracks or other damage.

18 A Snake Was Found With A Fully Formed Leg In China

Snake Was Found With A Fully Formed Leg In China

OK, so we’re fully aware of some false representations coming out of China. Take for instance the groping festival. Some of the news coming out of that country is suspect at best. But it appears as though this is completely authentic.

In 2009 a snake was discovered in China with a fully formed leg. A 66 year old woman discovered it clinging to her wall with its claws. She promptly beat it to death, we imagine like the gif below, and it has since been sent to a university in Western China to try and discover how this mutation occurred.

So I bet a lot of people are thinking that this impossible. Snakes do not have legs like lizards. But according to scientists all snakes have the genome to grow legs, it just isn’t activated. All that was needed for a snake to grow the leg was a mutation to turn the gene back on. This is what has probably happened.

19 A Cat Survived 4 Weeks In A Refrigerator

21 A Chicken Gave Birth To A Live Baby Chicken

chicken gives birth

We have all heard the question about what came first, the chicken or the egg, but what if there was no egg? Don’t laugh this off, because it did happen.

A chicken in Sri Lanka gave birth to a live baby chicken. How you say? Well, the chicken didn’t actually lay the egg that had the baby chick in it. It stayed inside the mother for 21 days and hatched inside her giving birth to a baby chicken. This caused the death of the mother.

22 Crocodiles Cant Stick Their Tongues Out

Crocodiles Cant Stick Their Tongues Out

A crocodile can’t stick its tongue out. Why? It’s tongue is attached to the bottom of its mouth by a membrane. The tongue also performs like out kidneys do in excreting salt. They use their tongues to excrete salt to prevent themselves from becoming dehydrated from the salt.  A crocodiles kidneys are less efficient then ours are and they have a thick skin that is salt resistant.

23 Sharks Cant Blink

Sharks Cant Blink

Sharks are the only fish that can blink with both eyes. Most fish don’t have eyelids, and only a few fish, like sharks, have nictitating eyelids, which consist of a membrane that closes over the eye like an upside-down eyelid. They also have great eyesight and can see in colour. It is thought that their eyes are 10 times more sensitive to light than humans eyes.

24 An Ostrich’s Eye And Brain Are The Same Size

Ostrich’s Eye And Brain Are The Same Size

An ostrich’s brain is the same size as its eye. It’s true, they have very small brains, and an intelligence to match. If you are ever confronted by an ostrich simply raise your  hand above your head as high as you can and it will think your hand is your head, and if it’s higher they are they will leave you alone. They aren’t very bright animals.

They are also related to dinosaurs and have flesh similar to a T-Rex!

25 Jellyfish Don’t Have A Heart Or Brain

Jellyfish Don’t Have A Heart Or Brain

Jellyfish are remarkable creatures. Did you know that jelly fish are 94% to 98% water and that they are older then dinosaurs? Their bodies are radial symmetry which means that if you were to cut one in half you would get two identical halfs. This is because all their body parts extend from one central point.

Jellyfish apart from having no brain also lack bones and a heart. Compared to most other animals they are a relatively simple and primitive life form. In place of a brain, Jellyfish have rudimentary sensory nerves at the base of their tentacles to see light, orient themselves and detect smells. Jellyfish prove that a brain and heart are not necessary to support life.

26 Lobsters, Spiders And Snails Have Blue Blood

Lobsters Spiders And Snails Have Blue Blood

Lobsters, spiders and snails have blue blood. How is this so? Shouldn’t blood be red? Not exactly.

These animals have bllue blood because their blood contains haemocyanin which contains copper and gives the blood its blue colour.

27 There’s A Catfish That Lives On Land

Catfish That Lives On Land

There is a catfish in the amazon that can not only breathe air, but also lives out of the water in the leaves on the bank. It has no eyes, and navigates and hunts its prey through touch.

28 Most Birds Do Not Have A Penis

Most male birds don’t have a penis. They have a cloaca which is also present on the female. The cloaca holds a penis like member that is usually covered in feathers, or in some cases, spines and brush like filaments. Unlike the penises of mammals, the cloaca is erected by lymph, not blood. Also, the “penis” of the birds curls up inside the bird when it is flaccid.

Most birds mate by the male bird balancing on top of the female and touching cloaca’s in a “cloacal kiss”. This process makes forced mating highly unsuccessful.

Birds that do have a penis are ducks, swans, geese, ratites and flamingos. But it is not like a mammals penis.

29 Tasmania Has Giant Freshwater Lobsters

Tasmania Has Giant Freshwater Lobsters

Australia is known for the strange and unusual. From its animals such as platypus and giant pink fluorescent slugs through to its pink or glowing lakes, the country is full of natural wonders. So it would probably come as no surprise to know that Australia is also home to a prehistoric giant freshwater lobster.

The freshwater lobsters, also known as crayfish, occupy an area in south east Australia and Tasmania. A mature adult lobster can grow to be as long as 80 centimetres (31.5 inches) and weigh as much as 5 kilograms (11 pounds). They can also live for as long as 40 years. Female freshwater lobsters don’t begin breeding until they are 14 and will only breed every other year as it takes them that long to brood their eggs and young.

Their diet usually consists of dead and rotting leaves, wood, the occasional invertebrate and dead fish or mammal that they may come across. They mainly occupy creeks and rivers as they need flowing water, but have been known to occupy farm dams. They can also navigate on land to move from one water source to another.

The freshwater lobster has been declared a protected species as their numbers have dwindled over the years due to harvesting and changes in water quality.

30 Male Fruit Flies Get Drunk When Females Won’t Have Sex

fruit flies get drunk

Surprisingly male fruit flies get drunk when they are unable to score with a female. Does this sound a little familiar? It probably, does and for good reason too. For many people it would almost perfectly resemble their Saturday nights. Head out for a night on the town, hope to meet a beautiful woman, and finally end the night with a little hanky panky between the sheets. While that is undoubtedly the goal of many the youthful men, for the majority of the time the final result is the same. They head home having had a fantastic night, but somewhat dejected after being rejected all night long by the fairer sex. To compensate for the lack of bedroom action, some men regretfully turn the the bottle to drown their sorrows.

OK, I know that isn’t always the way it goes down. Some people start drinking before they meet a suitable partner, others may not drink at all. In some situations there is no intention for the male to seek a mate for the night, they just want to either get blind rotten drunk, or just have a good time with friends. But in a lot of cases alcohol goes hand in hand with the one night stand, and if you can’t get laid, why not drown out your frustrations? That’s exactly what fruit flies do.

Imagine the life of a fruit fly. You don’t have very long to live and your entire life is to eat and have sex. Fruit is not as difficult to come across as sex is, and it can become a little frustrating when it becomes lacking. To compensate, male fruit flies get drunk to cope with the rejection.

Remember all those scientists who get all that funding money to further and better the human race? We can thank those guys. They decided that their extensive scientific background, high intelligence, and countless dollars from benefactors and government grants was best spent looking at why fruit flies get drunk. What they found was that male fruit flies get drunk when they have been spurned by females. But the findings do have parallels that can be of benefit to humans.

Now for the geeky explanation. The scientists looked at the flies brain chemistry for the experiment, so no animal porn here guys. What they discovered was that in the ones who haven’t had sex a chemical called NPF was low. They believe that this chemical plays a role in their reward system. Flies that have done something rewarding like mating or eating have higher levels of this chemical in their brain. But there’s more.

They found that alcohol is an extremely effective, and popular method of increasing levels of NPF. This chemical behaves in a similar way to a compound found in humans called NPY. NPY has been linked to disorders such as over eating.

Well, that’s the end of our list of crazy animal facts. But don’t despair. We have hundreds upon hundreds of more amazing facts that you simply won’t believe are true. So keep on browsing through to discover more of what we have to offer.
