Please be warned. Before reading any further you may find it difficult sleeping tonight. We are now going to give you some disgusting mattress facts.

Before you tuck into bed tonight here’s something to think about. A ten year old mattress weighs double what it did when it was new, because of the debris which is absorbed through the years. This debris includes dust mites, droppings and their decaying bodies, mold, millions of dead skin cells, dandruff, animal and human hair, secretions, excretions, lint, pollen, dust, soil, sand, a lot of perspiration, of which the average person loses a quart per day and “other” body fluids.

Lets look at this a little more, just if you are still thinking about keeping your bed for another ten years.

Because we sweat so much, even more during hot summer nights, this sweat builds up in the mattress. The majority of it is accumulated on the sheets and other bread spreads, but some of it finds its way to the mattress surface. If it can dry out there’s nothing to worry about. If it doesn’t dry, bacteria and mold can begin to build. This can cause serious health problems.

A human can shed up to 40,000 skin cells a minute. Work that out over only one nights sleep. Again, most of it is collected by the bedding, but as always, some makes its may to the surface, where it will remain. Along with the skin cells are dust mites. these microscopic insects can also cause health issues.

Do you recall the “other” body fluids? This can be saliva, urine, fecal material, and deposits left over from a sexual  conquest. Not only can these deposits cause the growth of mold and bacteria, they can also harbor disease, especially in motel mattresses.

If you’re reading these disgusting mattress facts and are now thinking of investing in a water bad that has a bladder that can’t possible pick up and retain these nasties, it too has problems. If left for a long time without changing the water inside, it can start to grow algae inside the bladder. Not a problem, but spring a leak and it can be a disaster for your health as well as your carpets.

You can mitigate these problems to some degree by purchasing a mattress protector. Waterproof one will be better, but it will not provide 100 percent protection.

Good night.
