Did you know that Thomas Edison was afraid of the dark? This was a man who was and is regarded by most people as a genius, one of the greatest inventors the world has ever know. He is most notably known for two of his most used inventions. One was the forerunner of vinyl records, the phonograph, which was able to record and play back sounds, and the incandescent light bulb, that was the mainstay of every house for decades.
Maybe the light bulb was an invention of necessity. Although the light bulb wasn’t his idea, Thomas Edison was the first to come up with a reliable, working electric light bulb. Prior to his invention the average person relied on flame for light, such as with gas lighting, candles and kerosene lanterns. The light bulb did away with these for many people. Perhaps the driving force behind the invention was Thomas Edison was afraid of the dark. That’s right, Thomas Edison was afraid of the dark. Thomas Edison revealed his fear of the dark during an interview. When Edison passed away, he died with all the lights in his house turned on.
While many may question why such an intelligent man such as Thomas Edison was afraid of the dark, it has little to do with intelligence. Fear is a natural instinct, and it can itself be irrational in the most rational of people.
