Martha Stewart and Anthony Hopkins once dated, but it didn’t last. This is hardly out of character for a Hollywood relationship, but the reason for the relationship breakdown is really peculiar, to say the least. So are you wondering what ended the brief relationship between Martha Stewart and Anthony Hopkins? The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal Lecter were behind it.

Martha Stewart is known, both within North America and abroad, as the quintessential home decoration guru. If it can be done with decoration or craft, Martha would know how to do it. Anthony Hopkins on the other hand is one of the A-lister Hollywood stars, recognized and applauded for his acting ability around the world. There’s hardly a role that he can’t perform to perfection, but one in particular will forever stand out above the rest. That role was a Hannibal Lecter.

Hopkins role as the cannibalistic doctor in The Silence of the Lambs earned him an Oscar. He portrayed Lecter with such a menacing performance that it is recognized as perhaps his best performance ever, despite being on film for only 16 minutes. Certainly the performance was both riveting and nerve wracking. But he may have done the job too well for Martha Stewart.

In 2006 she revealed on the Howard Stern show that she briefly dated Hopkins. The problem was that she couldn’t separate Hopkins from Lecter. She said that she found him “scary,” despite Lecter only being a fictional character. So what triggered this sudden irrational fear?

It seems as though Martha Stewart invited Anthony Hopkins for a little getaway to Maine. Nothing too wrong with that. They are both consenting adults and deserve to have time alone together if they so choose. The fatal decision for their relationship came when Martha decided to re-watch The Silence of the Lambs. The terrifying performance by Hopkins was far too much for Martha to stand. Despite Hopkins only acting to role out, Martha Stewart found herself asking the question, “Do you want someone eating your brain while you are sitting in your beautiful dining room in Maine?”

Logical question, or a little out of touch with reality?
