The oldest Prime Minister appointed for the first term was Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston on 6 February 1855 at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 17 days. He was also the last to die in office. The oldest to be appointed for any term was William Ewart Gladstone on 15 August 1892 at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 3 days.
