Most of us are familiar with the fairy tale of the Pied Piper Of Hamelin. In the story the village is overrun with rats, so a visitor, who just happens to play a pipe removes the rats by playing a magical tune. When the town folk refuse to pay the piper for his service he returns with his magic pipe and leads the children away to a cave until the towns people agree to pay, and they are returned. But the original story of the Pied Piper had a much more sinister ending. For in the original story, it ends with the Pied Piper drowning the children.
In the original story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, much of the story is as we know it, but it is the ending of the story that is much different. The Pied Piper returns to the town, not to lead the children away to a cave, but for revenge. He leads all the towns children to a river and drowns the children in the river. Well, all but one of the children were drowned by the Pied Piper in the original story. The one that wasn’t drowned could not keep up with the rest because he was lame. It was a cruel type of genocide perpetrated by a true monster. Perhaps the people of the town should have either paid the piper, or not have trusted a stranger in the first place.
Some scholars even believe this original story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin even had undertones of pedophilia in it. How creepy is this story now?
