origin of blowjob

Have you ever wondered where certain words came from? Take blow job for example. Blow job is the slang term for oral sex, and like many words in the English language it has evolved over time to become what it is today.

It would come as no surprise to discover that many words and phrases we use today had very different origins. Sometimes it was due to confusion or misunderstanding, as was the case when the sperm whale got its name. Other instances of names being given are the result of a sick and twisted sense of humor, which happened with Dildo island in Canada. Whatever the reason for the name or the word, we all know what they mean, but not where they came from. So what was the origin of the word blowjob?

Most men wouldn’t care less where the word originated from, they would only care if they were receiving it. But it has a really remarkable journey through history that many people may find interesting.

The current form of the word blow job began taking it’s current shape during the 1800’s. Blowsy was slang for a prostitute, which itself was a turn of reference for blow. The word blow during the same period was slang for ejaculation. It continued to evolve until the firth third of the 20th century. By the 1930’s blow job became common slang for oral sex. Ask any woman who has performed oral sex and they will confirm it certainly is a job.

In ancient Greece it was known as playing the flute, which I suppose would have produced some tones from the lucky man.

You may find it fascinating to learn that humans aren’t the only species on this planet who perform oral sex. For a little more reading on a taboo subject we recommend that you read our fact about bats engaging in oral sex
